Austen, Jane
(16 dic. 1775, Steventon, Hampshire, Inglaterra–18 jul. 1817, Winchester, Hampshire).

Novelista inglesa. Hija de un párroco de la Iglesia anglicana, vivió en el limitado mundo de los clérigos rurales y la pequeña burguesía terrateniente que retrata en su literatura; su compañía más cercana fue su hermana Cassandra. La mayor parte de sus primeras obras son parodias, del género sentimental las más notables. En sus seis largas novelas –Criterio y sensibilidad (1811), Orgullo y prejuicio (1813), El parque de Mansfield (1814), Emma (1815), Persuasión (1817) y La abadía de Northanger (publicada en 1817, pero escrita antes que las demás)– forjó la comedia de costumbres que da cuenta de la vida de la clase media inglesa de la época. Su estilo se caracteriza por el ingenio, el realismo, la perspicaz simpatía y la prosa brillante. Por su tratamiento de la vida cotidiana y la gente común, fue la primera en dotar a la novela de su carácter netamente moderno. Publicó sus libros en forma anónima, y dos de ellos aparecieron después de su muerte. Falleció probablemente a causa de la enfermedad de Addison.
